Looking For A Wedding Venue? Be Sure To Learn About Vendor Restrictions

Blog

If you are planning on getting married soon, and are currently on the hunt for a wedding venue, make sure that you learn about vendor restrictions before you sign a contract on any venue that you are interested in. Here are three different types of vendor restrictions that you should be sure to inquire about. Keep in mind that not all vendor restrictions are bad -- sometimes the in-house vendors and prices can save you some money -- however, you should always be aware of your choices and make sure that they fit with your vision for your wedding.

#1 Decorations

The first thing you want to inquire about are wedding decorations restrictions. Many venues require you to use the tables and chairs that they have on site. Other venues prefer that you use their table clothes, napkins and dinnerware.

If the venue requires you to use their own materials for your wedding, be sure to check them out and make sure that they are up to your standards before you sign the contract. If they have a list of supplied vendors, research them and make sure that they can provide the right accessories for your wedding.

Also, find out what type of other outside decorations you are allowed to bring in and use. For example, venues may have their own rules about the use of candles, twinkle-lights, flowers and other common decorating items. See if there are any restrictions about these types of decorations as well and make sure that their rules fits with your decorating vision.

#2 Food

One of the biggest areas where many venues issue restrictions is surrounding food. Food is restricted for a variety of reasons, from licenses to a desire to generate more money and use their own in-house staff for large events. Find out if you are able to bring in outside food and vendors. If you can bring in outside food, you also need to check and find out if your vendors can have access to the kitchen equipment and cleaning equipment, or if they will be required to bring already prepared food to the site and provide all of their supplies.

Some places will require you to do your main catering through them, but will allow you to bring in an outside vendor for dessert. If there is a food vendor that you know you want to work with, be sure that they are able to work with whatever rules or restrictions the venue has in place for the event.

#3 Music

One of the less common restrictions, but one that some venues still have, pertains to music. Some venues may ask that you use equipment they have on site. Others may allow you to bring in an outside DJ or band, but may restrict the type of equipment that is used on-site or the sound level of the music that is provided. There may also be rules regarding how late you can play sound. More commonly, there could be rules surrounding how early the DJ or band could arrive, and when they would need to be packed up and out of the place.

Before you sign a contract for a wedding venue, be sure to read over it carefully for restrictions and rules that will affect your wedding. It's not a bad thing for a venue to have rules and restrictions, you just need to make sure that they work for you.
